Who is Niki Daniels?

Niki started her writing career constructing poems from the wind. Her collection “skywalking” won acclaim from the judges of the Jamaican National Creative Writing Awards in 1995. Her poetry has been published in newspapers and anthologies, and was one of the “six-pack” of chapbooks published by the Calabash Foundation in 2005. Niki became a Baha'i in 2001 and started putting Baha'i prayers and writings to music.

In 2021, Niki designed and emcee’d “Poetry of a Nation”—a series of Zoom poetry readings—for Greenwood County Diversity, a non-profit group focused on celebrating and promoting diversity and interracial dialogue.

Niki’s mentors and idols in the vibrant circles of Caribbean literature tend to peek through in her work. They are as diverse as her own music. Mervyn Morris (JA poet laureate/ word conservator/ always ironic); Lorna Goodison (story teller/ mood-maker); Mbala (vegan/ percussionist /serious with a highly developed funny-bone); Derek Walcott (Nobel prizewinner/ passionate/ fiercely perfect visionary); Tony McNeill (brilliant/ insecure/haunted).

Niki is working on her first EP—which she plans to produce under her own label. She'd love to hear what you think, so drop her a line and let her know which tracks you want to hear on it!
